Chris Zickefoose, Less Than, Greater Than, or Equal To, 2018, Found wood inlayed into painted plywood, 48" x 28"

Opening Reception: Friday, July 6, 2018

OOF Books is pleased to present "Homestead": a solo show featuring the work of artist and sculptor Chris Zickefoose.

In this body of work, Zickefoose utilizes materials that are made readily available due to rapid development. In the Mojave desert there is a transformation occurring—old homestead cabins are being demolished or renovated to accommodate a growing desire to occupy the Joshua Tree area. Old roof tiles, support struts, sidings, fence posts and other architectural debris pile up on these re-developed properties. Homestead is an encapsulation of these fragments, paying homage to the past while also welcoming the future.

Zickefoose removes the found materials from their context, allowing them to transcend themselves and take on a metaphysical utility. His sculptures challenge the ways in which we assign meaning and value to the physical world.

Chris Zickefoose is an artist originating in Baltimore, MD. He received his BFA in General Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2014. Before relocating to California, he had exhibited extensively throughout the Baltimore city area. Most recently, he completed the JTHAR residency program in Joshua Tree, CA. Determined by his environment, his work is focused on the inherent virtues of common construction materials and the urban landscape. He presently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
